Workshop - Millimeter Binding

Edelpapband or Millimeter Binding workshop
a workshop taught by Andrew Huot
June 11-12, 2016, 9:00-5:00

Long Beach Museum of Art
2300 East Ocean Blvd.
Long Beach CA 90803

The Millimeter Binding or Edelpappband is German in origin and makes a simple, elegant binding. With thin boards, edges of leather and decorated papers for the covers, it creates graceful detail on thin printed or blank books. The book is sewn, glued, and boards are attached to the text block. Then edges or corners are reinforced with leather before final covering in paper. Students will complete one Edelpappband binding during the class.

Andrew Huot, a bookbinder, conservator and book artist, is the proprietor of Big River Bindery in Davenport, Iowa. He exhibits his artwork widely, has worked as a Conservator at several institutions, including the Folger Shakespeare library, and teaches Conservation, Preservation and Bookbinding at the Graduate School of Library Science, University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign.
