HBC53, Annual Member’s Exhibition, Summer 2025 at the American Bookbinders Museum

Robin is thinking about HBC53, I hope you are too. She is working on the cover design for the HBC53 Catalog. You can participate in the design by sending photos of any interesting plaquettes or models you have made. They do not need to be related to the book you are entering in HBC53. Please photograph the plaquettes in natural light, against a white background, without shadows and send them to robin@robinbrandes.com. See example photo below.

WORKSHOPS

EARLY GOTHIC BINDING WITH SHAUN THOMPSON

This 5-day long workshop will explore recreating the binding of manuscript CUL Add. 4080, Preces et Meditationes using authentic materials. Shaun Thompson will be visiting from Cambridge University Library to lead this workshop.

December 2nd - 6th at the Codex Foundation
Logan Book Arts Center, 1331 7th St., Unit C, Berkeley, CA
$950 for HBC Members (scholarships available)/$1150 for Non-Members.

We are very grateful to be able to offer a workshop with this esteemed British book conservator. He is in the US on professional travel, and unfortunately because of this, the dates of the class are extremely soon. We would be thrilled if you can join us for this unique opportunity as he generally only offers workshops in Europe. In case we cannot find at least 4-5 students to sign up, we will need to cancel; the latest date we would need to know is November 18.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the annual HBC holiday party on Tuesday, December 3rd. We are still exploring venues and expect this to be a ticketed event. More details will be coming soon!

LETTERFORM ARCHIVE TOUR

Thanks to everyone who came to our tour of the Letterform Archive! Our host, Christina, pulled out some really incredible pieces from the collection for us.

We got to take a look at an incredible book of typefaces from the Cuneo Press of New England which folded out to become its own book stand! This binding took over a decade to develop by a husband and wife team who patented the design! It was also used for large books like dictionaries and bibles.

We also got to see a beautiful fine binding of the poem "Grass" by poet Kim Su-yong designed to look like blades of grass as it's opened. This book is also in their online archive if you want to see more details about it!
