Board member elections time is here!

One notable change this year is that Gillian Boal, Vice President and Wearer of Many HBC Hats Through the Years will be stepping down. Bravely stepping into the breach as she often brilliantly does will be Insiya Dhatt, who previously handled Digital Projects. Our new Digital Projects Chair/Webmaster will be Christopher Morris, longtime bookbinding student and occasional professional South Bay bookbinder.

The position of Workshops Chair (my personal favorite!) is still open and anyone can step up at any time to let us know you're interested. We did not receive any nominees other than the ones listed below, but it would be great for us to know you, the membership, support us. HBC BINDERY NIGHTS AT SFCB

Remember that HBC members have free access to studio space at the San Francisco Center for the Book for HBC Bindery Nights!

The last HBC Bindery Night in this series has been rescheduled. The new date is Tuesday, March 11. Come for inspiration or motivation or to use the equipment at SFCB. Open to all HBC members, from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

HBC53: Annual Members’ Exhibition at the American Bookbinders Museum

Will be held May 17 to August 23 at The American Bookbinders Museum.

This non-juried exhibition is an excellent opportunity for any HBC member to showcase their recently made artist books, fine bindings, restored books, boxes, broadsides, lettering arts and other book-related arts. Participation is open to all HBC members. You may enter 2 objects for a single registration fee of $45. If you have questions, contact exhibitions@handbookbinders.org

The intent to enter form for HBC53 is available on the HBC website. Please complete the form by March 10, 2025. This will ensure that you will receive future communications about the Exhibition.

DATES: 2 sessions, Saturday April 12 and Saturday April 19 from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm

LOCATION: The Studio of Nothing Else, 3008 Acton Street, Berkeley

In this class, we'll be learning to print monotypes, a popular printmaking technique that is in many ways a natural for painters to learn. Monotype is a great way to work out ideas because prints will be finished in a couple of hours. You will create unique images that also lead to a series of ghosts, images sharing a relationship with the first pull. The evolution of the ghosts can be fascinating to see how an idea can develop. Artists like Degas used monotypes to develop a structure and value base for their pastels. Learning the different textures that can be created and the ways the ghosts can be altered will be the focus of the class.

BIO: Barry Ebner is fascinated by visual moments, where texture, contrast, shape and meaning all collide. He is a printmaker, specializing in monotype and intaglio. He has taught his monotype techniques in the Bay Area at Kala Art Institute, the Academy of Art University and in Santiago, Chile at Taller 99. He has participated in printmaking projects in Havana, Cuba, Basel Switzerland and Santiago. He has lived and worked for the last twenty years in Berkeley, CA where he maintains The Studio of Nothing Else. He also sneaks out to go on Plein Air painting excursions that can be found on instagram on @Coastpaintings. His print work can be found on instagram at @ebnersart. When not creating art or teaching, he can be found playing guitar, badly.

NY2CA Gallery in Benicia, California is pleased to present In the Realm, a solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist, writer, and cultural worker Nanette Wylde. Wylde will be exhibiting works on paper (monoprints) and handmade artist books (artwork which takes book form). In the Realm considers relationships that humans enact with and upon the natural world through Wylde's distinctive, hybrid media approach.

Wylde’s work is deeply rooted in using narrative as a lens to explore the complexities of human perception, societal constructs, and environmental consciousness. With a background in Behavioral Science and an MFA in Interactive Multimedia and Printmaking, her artistic practice blends research with creative expression, offering thought-provoking insights into the systems and stories that shape our world.

The exhibition will open with a reception at NY2CA Gallery on March 22, 5–7pm, featuring music by Karl Hartmann. Additional special events include: The Rhinoceros Project Sewing Circle on Sunday, March 30 from 1–4pm; and an Ekphrastic Poetry Reading with Benicia Literary Arts on Saturday April 19 at 5:30pm.
