NEW WORKSHOP WITH SUE DOGGETT AND KATE HOLLAND

HBC is excited to announce that we will be hosting Designer Bookbinder Fellows Kate Holland and Sue Doggett for a 4-day workshop this winter: Creative Processes and Decorative Techniques for Bookbinding. The workshop is a rare combination of both rigorous design instruction focused on visual storytelling in conversation with a text and the complex material skills and techniques needed to achieve one's creative vision when binding a book. Students should have some leather paring experience, and the workshop will be held in the CODEX Foundation Flex Space in north Berkeley.

When: February 12-15, 2026; 9:00am - 5:00 pm daily with a break for lunch
Where: The CODEX Foundation, 1331 7th Street, Berkeley CA
Price: $1150 Non-members & $950 Members plus $120 materials fee
Prerequisites: Basic Leather Paring

There are scholarships available that would cover half of the tuition for this workshop. If you’d like to apply, please fill out this scholarship form by December 1st. You would still be responsible for paying half the tuition, as well as the full materials fee.

HBC BINDERY NIGHTS

Join your HBC friends for inspiration or motivation or to use the equipment at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Please note, the Kwikprint machines are not available for use because they require a separate registration. All other bindery equipment will be available.

Beth Redmond will be available to answer questions and provide assistance. She is HBC’s Exhibitions Chair and is graduating from the American Academy of Bookbinding, so please don’t hesitate to pick her brain about all things bookbinding!

HBC Bindery Nights are open to all HBC members, no registration required, from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM in the SFCB Bindery. Fall dates are:

Join the Fellowship of the American Bibliophilic Societies members interested in bindings for a presentation and discussion with Benjamin Albritton, Rare Books Curator at Stanford on Monday, October 20 at 4:30 PST on Zoom.

Ben will present on volumes related to the development of fine binding practice in California in the early 1900s. He will highlight binders associated with The Bookbinders’ Guild of California first exhibition in 1902 and bindings displayed at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition.

Arion Press is proud to announce Luca Antonucci (Colpa Press), Abby Banks (Auspicious Books), and Zach Clark (National Monument Press) for the finale event of the 2025 Arion Press Craft Talk Series, Publishing as Practice on October 30 at 6PM at the Bayfront Theater, 2 Marina Boulevard Building B, in San Francisco.

In a conversation moderated by John DeMerritt (DeMerritt Pauwels Editions), Antonucci, Banks, and Clark will discuss the art and craft of small press publishing. The conversation will touch on their differing creative practices, community experiences, and some of their favorite "scary stories" from years working in small press publishing.

The talk will be one hour with a 15 minute Q&A, and a reception to follow in the Arion Press Gallery. Buy your tickets here.
