HBC53: Annual Members’ Exhibition at the American Bookbinders Museum

Will be held May 17 to August 23 at the American Bookbinders Museum located at 355 Clementina St, San Francisco, CA.

Save the Dates:

• HBC53 Opening Event, Saturday June 7 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. Enjoy the exhibition with fellow bookbinders and friends while partaking in some light refreshments. 

• Bound with Pride Panel Discussion on Saturday, June 21, 11:00am. Get tickets for this virtual event hosted by the American Bookbinders Museum. Hear some of the Rainbow Pride flag book artists talk about their books.

• Between the Covers, an opportunity to view selected books outside the cases: Saturday, August 23, 4:30 – 6:00 pm. A vitrine allows a book to be displayed for public viewing but stands in opposition to the nature of a book. It limits your view to one perspective of a complex object. At this closing event we will examine the hidden content/details of selected books.

Please join us at the McCune Room at JFK Library in Vallejo for Juliayn Coleman’s talk, "This Book Is to Be Taken Care Of: Vernacular, Folk, and Nonprofessional Book Repair from the Shores of Book Island." We hope to see you there!

HBC BINDERY NIGHTS AT SFCB

We have summer dates for HBC Bindery Night. Come for inspiration or motivation or to use the equipment at SFCB. Open to all HBC members, from 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Summer dates are:

• Wednesday, June 18

• Wednesday, July 2

SUMMER WORKSHOPS AT SFCB WITH MICHAEL BURKE AND DOMINIC RILEY

Michael Burke and Dominic Riley will return to San Francisco Center for the Book in July and August for another summer season of bookbinding workshops. 

Highlights include a two-week class on Lacunose and Tudor-Style binding, inspired by Dominic's first teacher, Paul Delrue. Also offered is a five-day Simplified Leather Binding class, teaching an efficient and polished method of creating a leather-covered case binding. 

Other workshops with space still available include a Dust Jacket Repair class (an excellent intro to paper repair, beginners welcome), the Ideal Sketchbook, and the All-In-One Clamshell Box. The Millimeter Binding, Library Style Binding, and Lining Techniques workshops are full but we are taking names for the waitlist.

NOTES FROM JULIAYN COLEMAN ON OUR RECENT BARRY EBNER WORKSHOP

For anyone who likes making paste papers, marbled paper, or any other type of decorated paper, this was a very fun class! We were situated in Barry's home studio, which is an open, airy space that is quite inspirational. Barry showed some of his own work using the techniques he would be teaching us. Then he explained and demonstrated the method. He gave us the supplies and tools we needed to make a series of papers, and we were off to the races!

I made a series of six prints, all of which have relationships to one another through building visual themes and making ghost prints. As a habitual paste paper maker, I enjoyed learning ways to elevate my patterns by adding and subtracting visual elements, from feedback from the instructor. My fellow student and I also played off each others' themes a bit, which was especially fun. All in all, a great time was had, getting inky and making prints!
