A Tour of the Bancroft Library Collection of early bindings from the 15th and 16th centuries and remarkable 16th century English painted binding. Also, a book by Nicolas Spierinck who died in 1546 and was a noted binder in Cambridge, England.

The Bancroft library has the largest collection of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson bindings in the world, David plans to pull a number of these. Thanks to Norman Strouse the Bancroft has many other wonderful 20th century bindings from Sangorski & Sutcliffe to Philip Smith.

David Faulds, our host is Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at the Bancroft Library, University of California. David has been at Bancroft for a little over four years. Before he spent twelve years in Atlanta at Emory University and prior to that he was a librarian at the Beinecke Library at Yale University. David has had a long interest in bookbinding demonstrated by taking Sue Allen's class on 19th publishers' bookbindings, Jan Storm van Leuven's class on the Introduction to the History of Bookbinding and Christopher Clarkson's class on Medieval and Renaissance bookbinding, all through Rare Book School in Virginia.
