PANEL DISCUSSION: FINDING YOUR VOICE: DESIGN IN THE MAKING OF YOUR BOOK
Our panel features Samuel Feinstein, Lang Ingalls, Suzanne Moore, and is moderated by Beth Redmond and Coleen Curry. Together, they will explore the complexities of the design process, offering insights on how to navigate a project from inspiration to completion. They will address common questions such as:
How do you find inspiration and start a new project?
How do you know if your project is heading in the right direction?
What should you do when you're stuck?
How do you know when a design is complete?
Panelist Bios:
Suzanne Moore layers painting, lettering, printmaking, and drawing to create contemporary manuscript books and limited edition books. Suzanne's deep research has lead her to create book work presenting an array of subjects. Her books blend abstract and representational imagery, rich color and surface treatments with textual content and contemporary lettering and typography to create work that obscures the line between word and image, legibility and abstraction.
She was one of two Americans on the Wales-based team creating contemporary interpretive illuminations for the Saint John's Bible, commissioned for Saint John's Abbey, in Minnesota.
Her work is shown widely, and it is collected privately and by institutions.
Suzanne teaches about contemporary manuscript design, conceptual book design and on painting and collage techniques.
Lang Ingalls began studying fine bookbinding years ago, notably at the Centro del bel libro with Edwin Heim, and at the American Academy of Bookbinding with Tini Muira and Monique Lallier. She has studied with many others as well, and currently teaches to pass on all the knowledge she has gained. She is also involved with the international binding competition OPEN SET. These efforts are an extension of her interest in bringing a larger audience towards an understanding of fine binding, and bookbinding in general.
Her book work is quiet and solitary, and she is delighted that she continues to find joy in each and every book she produces.
Her work shows in the states and abroad regularly, and is found in public and private collections.
Samuel Feinstein trained at the North Bennet Street School in the two-year full-time bookbinding program under Jeff Altepeter, full-time instructor, and Martha Kearsley, part-time instructor. He strives to make his dedication and passion evident in his work, with a particular focus on craftsmanship.
He has also given lectures and presentations for The Society of Gilders, The Caxton Club, the American Bookbinders Museum, Wellesley College, and the University of lowa. Samuel's award-winning work has been exhibited across the United States and internationally
He currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois.
