SOPHIA BOGLE
JANUARY 30, 2016
12-4PM
1890 BRYANT STREET, SF CA 94110
Focuses on ARCHIVAL repairs for case-bound book-cloth books.
Do you have books suffering from unsightly blemishes or loose hinges? Then this is the class foryou! You can improve the quality of your books for re-sale!
We will apply Sophia's Hierarchy of Repairs: Clean, Color, Correct, Paste Protect. Bring your ugliest broken book-cloth books and we will improve both appearance and structure.
The first half will cover cleaning and other aesthetic practices such as Air bubbles, Corner repair, Color and Gilt touch up.
The second half will cover broken outer joints including making paper Vs and Os to help with the hinging. Then Sophia will teach over vs. under for inner hinge repairs. This will all be accomplished with various Japanese tissues and archival papers. There should be time for you to practice these.
We are not covering sewing at all so make sure your book's text-blocks are sound!
If there is time, we will practice putting a dust jacket into a protective cover.
Questions are encouraged! With over 25 years of hands-on experience restoring books and a diploma in Book Conservation from the American Academy of Bookbinding Sophia is prepared to give you a thoughtful answer to any book repair questions.
