Leather Book Care and Repair

JANUARY 31, 2016
12-4PM

This class focuses on ARCHIVAL care and repairs for leather books.
Did you know that Conservators no longer recommend using Oily Leather Dressing for leather books? Find out what they do recommend!
We will apply Sophia’s Hierarchy of Repairs: *Protect, Clean, Color, Correct, Paste Protect. Bring your worst, most beat up leather books and we will improve both appearance and structure. You may not get them all done that day but you will have the information to finish them on your own. Only bring hollow back leather books!*
During the first half you will learn the conservator approved method for treating undamaged and damaged leathers. We will also talk about coloring for damaged leather. For the second half Sophia will demonstrate a basic structural repair that won't destroy original materials. Lifting edges and making a hollow are two skills you will get to practice on your own books.
If there is time, you will learn a simple method for fitting a polyester film cover to help protect books with weak hinges.
Questions are encouraged! With over 25 years of hands-on experience restoring books and a diploma in Book Conservation from the American Academy of Bookbinding Sophia is prepared to give you a thoughtful answer to any book repair questions.
*See the Save Your Books' YouTube video on Book Anatomy 101 to help you determine if your leather book has a hollow back.
