Egg glaire: It’s challenging, but the results are absolutely gorgeous. This
workshop will explore multiple methods of finishing with egg glaire,
a technique which gives you the cleanest, brightest impressions. Once
you understand how it works, tooling with egg glaire is very approachable
and can be used effectively in both traditional and modern binding
designs. While the focus of the workshop will be specifically on
gold tooling, applications that build upon blind impressions will also
be covered. Participants will work on several pre-made plaquettes in
both goatskin and calf. This course is also a very rare opportunity to
use finishing tools from the collection of the renowned bookbinder
Florence Walter. The tools are part of the holdings of the Mills College
Book Art Program and includes over 500 individual tools. Anticipating
the variety of skill levels this course might attract, there will be a lot of
one-on-one instruction to address each student’s individual experience
and project needs.
Samuel Feinstein is a private practice bookbinder specializing in fine bindings, gold finishing, rounded spine clamshell boxes, and new bindings in period style. He trained at the North Bennet Street School in Boston under Jeff Altepeter and Martha Kearsley, graduating in 2012. He lives and works in Chicago, and his work can be seen at www.samuelfeinsteinbookbinding.com/
Workshops : $1000.00 per workshop. Tuition includes all materials
with the following exception: There will be an additional materials
fee of $100.00 for Samuel Feinstein’s workshop for leather plaquettes,
gold, and other materials for a total of $1100.00
Summer Institute Package (Application coming soon…)
$1950.00. Package includes registration for one 5-day workshop in session
I and one 5-day workshop in session II. If Samuel Feinstein’s
workshop is included, the package price for two workshop will be
$2050.00. The Summer Institute Package does not include housing.
To Apply : The Mills College Summer Institute for Book and Print Technologies workshops are taught at a master class level. In order to ensure that all participants are prepared for this high level and quick pace of instruction, we will only be accepting applicants with previous book art experience that is relevant to the workshop they are applying for.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until a workshop or seminar is full. A non-refundable deposit of $100.00 will be due upon acceptance to hold your spot in a workshop. Applications will continue to be accepted until workshops and seminars are full. Once full, additional qualified applicants will have the option to be added to a waiting list.

On-Campus housing may be available for a limited number of students and will require submission of a Mills housing application. (Availability details available starting 2018…)
Location: Mills College is located at 5000 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland, CA 94613 off of Highway 580 in Oakland at the junction of 580 (MacArthur Freeway) and Highway 13 (Warren Freeway), approximately seven miles from the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Driving directions can be found on our campus map or for recorded driving directions call 510.430.3250. The Book Art department is located in the CPM building (#46 on the Mills campus map).

On-Campus Parking: Free on-campus parking will be provided to participating students.
On-Campus Dining: The Tea Shop at Mills College offers a variety of dining options during most meal hours. An updated summer schedule will be available prior to arriving to campus.
