HBC47 - 2019

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The reception of the 47th exhibition of the Hand Bookbinders of California is the ideal opportunity to announce new board members, and revisit the mission we serve. Our board’s new leadership of Juliayn Coleman (President) and Gillian Boal (Vice President) will bring a fresh perspective on what brings us together as bookbinders.

To this end, the board will be creating an exciting year of programming through workshops, special collection tours, and holiday events. We hope that you will take part and find new ways to benefit, educationally and socially. This celebration marks the turning of a new year for HBC, and allows us the opportunity to reconnect with our community of binders, and welcome new members. I’d like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to the following people who have made this exhibition possible.

Our organization is indebted to the San Francisco Public Library, and we are especially grateful to the staff Samantha Cairo-Toby, Hannah Gribetz and Andrea Grimes who have helped to bring this show to life. It is an honor to be returning to the Skylight Gallery, and all the wealth of history that both the Gallery and the Marjorie G. and Carl W. Stern Book Arts & Special Collections carry. We would not have a successful exhibition without the stellar coordination of Beth Redmond in her second term as Exhibitions Chair.

The resulting exhibition—as I’m sure you’ll agree—shows her enthusiasm for the field of bookbinding and her excellent work in leading the exhibitions team. The supportive assistance from all of the HBC board members (listed in this catalog) and especially the outstanding volunteers including Sarah Songer, Servane Briand and Paloma Lucas were crucial to the exhibits success. We thank each and every one of you.

It is my sincere hope that members enjoy the full experience of this well-designed catalog, designed by Ellen Reilly, in tandem with the exhibition itself. It has been an honor to serve as President these last four years, and I look forward to supporting HBC, and enjoying this and many more exhibitions as a continuing member.
